What Do I Think of Jesus?
- In Mark 8:27, Jesus asked His disciples "whom do men say that I am?". The disciples responded "John the Baptist; but some say Elias; and others, one of the prophets. And he saith unto them, but whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto him, thou art the Christ.
- This is the question that distinguishes between true Christianity and false religion. This question distinguishes between a person going to Heaven or Hell when they die. Peter rightly answered when he acknowledged Jesus as "the Christ". Jesus is the promised Messiah of Is. 53. He is the eternal Son of God who became man, without ceasing to be God. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful man. (Is. 7:14; 9:6; Luke 1:35; John 1:1-2, 14; II Cor. 5:19-21; Gal. 4:4-5; Phil. 2:5-11).
- Jesus Christ accomplished redemption through His death on the cross as a substitution sacrifice for those who will believe on Him and call upon His name for salvation. And by His literal and physical resurrection from the dead our justification (legal declaration of "not guilty" by God) is made sure (Acts 2:18-36; Rom. 3:24- 25; I Peter 2:24; Eph. 1:7; 1 Peter 1:3-5
- So why is this an important question to ask yourself? Because if you have believed on a Jesus that earned His place in the Godhead, or believed on a Jesus that is not equal with the Father and Holy Spirit, then you have not believed on a Biblical Jesus and you are still in your sins. First John 5:7 makes it clear ... "For there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one."
Will I Go to Heaven When I Die?
This is a question which must be asked of the One who has the power to give you eternal life in Heaven or eternal death in the lake of fire. Thankfully, God tells us in His Word, the Bible, how we can know where we will spend eternity. First John 5:11-13 tells us ..."And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."
So the question then becomes ... "do I have the Son"? To have the Son you must first realize your need for the Son. The Bible says (and your life verifies) that you have sinned against God (Romans 3:23, Romans 3:10) and that you are condemned already before God, your Creator (John 3:18). Secondly, you must understand that your sin separates you from God and has brought both physical and spiritual death onto yourself (Is. 59:2; Romans 6:23). But the good news is that God loves you and has provided a way for your sin to be forgiven and for you to go to Heaven.
Luke 13:3 and 13:5 ... "I tell you, Nay: but, except repent, ye shall all likewise perish". To ""repent" is to change your mind about your sin and your need for a Saviour. Before a person can be saved they must understand they have a need for a Saviour.
John 3:16 ... "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." The Bible teaches that God is love and therefore not willing that any should perish but, rather, that all should come unto repentance. While God hates sin, He loves the sinner and desires that every person would be saved.
Romans 10:9-10 tells us ... "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation". For a person to "... hath the Son...", in prayer 1) admit to God that you are sinner who needs their sin forgiven 2) confess Jesus as the Son of God 3) believe on Jesus' work on the cross (His death, burial, and resurrection) for you, and 4) ask God to save you through your faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.
When a person exclusively puts their faith in God's only begotten Son, the Bible teaches says "...thou shalt be saved". This a promise from God Almighty. A promise from the One who created you and has the power and authority to save you.
Will you go to Heaven when you die? Yes, but only if you have trusted in Christ alone as your Saviour.
